Newsletter Strategy

You know how important email is to gaining and retaining an audience on your own terms, but don’t know where to start. Or your existing newsletter no longer makes sense for your goals. Maybe you have a book/product/new idea you want to promote, but hate the idea of spamming your biggest fans.

Are you thinking “that’s me!?”

I specialize in helping businesses — newsrooms, nonprofits, shop owners, independent journalists and more — launch and improve their email program. This isn’t “number go up” or “10 emojis that will increase open rates” consulting. It’s about building solid, quality email lists. It’s about email strategy that supports your specific goals, not just another marketing channel to worry about.

As the newsletter editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, I managed more than a dozen active lists, launched multiple successful newsletters, and improved key metrics above industry averages. At ProPublica, I wrote the weekly Dispatches newsletter, featuring some of the best journalists in the country, deepening the relationship between the newsroom and our readers.

I’ve worked with newsrooms, writers, audience & engagement teams on both high-level editorial strategy and technical nitty gritty (in email software of all types) to make it a reality.

I’m curious to hear your story.

How I work:

Audit: I take a holistic look at editorial, growth and other factors in your newsletter and offer recommendations and tactical suggestions for getting it done. For independent writers, I offer this for a flat fee based on your current list size. For organizations businesses and non-profits, the price is based on the complexity and specific needs of your organization. Get in touch below!

Ongoing strategy consulting: Want an ongoing check-in on your newsletter goals and tactics? I offer 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month engagements of once-a-month calls, paired with email check-ins.

Specific content projects: Need to develop a formal content strategy or email workflow that matches the people and resources you have available? Want to reduce your email cadence but increase impact? Not sure if your emails are reaching your intended audience? We’ll discuss your goals, investigate where you are now and I’ll offer content, tactical and workflow recommendations. In some cases, I may have bandwidth to make those recommendations a reality myself.

What clients say about my work:

Taylor is a great editor and newsletter strategist who helped improve our small nonprofit organization’s overall program. She carefully audited our systems and recommended content and workflow changes that help us everyday. She understands how to put an audience first and how to improve all aspects of email newsletter programs.

Ginny LaRoe, First Amendment Coalition

Taylor was instrumental in helping me take my newsletter from something I wrote sporadically to a regular publication, with dedicated sections and more engaging content. I’ve been steadily growing my subscriber list — adding over 100 subscribers in the past few months — and, perhaps more importantly, I now hear regularly from my readers. It’s become one of the most rewarding spaces for actually connecting with my readers!

With Taylor’s help, we were able to reassess our entire newsletter strategy and begin to better engage with our subscribers. She helped us identify ways we could more effectively connect with New England communities and newsrooms. We’re looking forward to putting her suggestions to practice.
